Social changes

I’ve been marinating on The Curvy Nerd’s post yesterday about losing friends after weight loss.  Having just moved to a new town, my relationships with my friends are already changed (plus, I’m making new friends now).  However, I keep thinking about thinking about her second question,

Have you ever felt like certain people in your life purposely try to sabotage or discourage you from your weight loss/lifestyle change?

It is hard to believe that people would want to hinder your ability to be successful in a healthy life-change, but I suppose it is possible.  For example, my family was visiting us this past week and there a few times that I heard, “it’s no big deal.  It’s just a slice of toast” …or crackers & cheese…or yogurt….  To them these things sound harmless in moderation, and I have to remind myself that they do not understand all the reasons behind the boundaries I set for myself.  In fact, my own husband was enjoying a special premium ice cream the other night and offered me a taste.  When I said no he asked again and I nearly lost it.  Of course he wasn’t trying to derail me, just wanted to include the one he loves in something that he was enjoying.

Has this happened to you?  Are you able to patiently stay firm with your position?  What helps you see this situation in a new way?

Friend Makin’ Mondays: What’s In Your Fridge

It’s Monday.  Time for FMM, thanks to a few new blogger friends.  Check out my answers to the questions below, and take a stab at them yourself.  Don’t forget to share your answers with me in the comments.

What’s in Your Fridge?

1.) List a few common items that can always be found in your fridge.
Coffee creamer, carrots, string cheese, and mixed greens for salad.  I’m pretty proud of that list!

2.) What kind of milk do you drink?
Sometimes 1%, sometimes vanilla almond milk.

3.) Do you prefer fresh or frozen vegetables?
Fresh for sure!  But I always keep a few frozen bags of broccoli, stir fry mix, and green beans because they make great add-ins for protein.

4.) What do you currently have to drink in the fridge?
Sparkling mineral water and flat water.

5.) How often do you clean out your refrigerator?
Actually I almost never cleaned it before, but last year I read this article from Real Simple about speed cleaning your fridge and ever since then I’ve been able to stay on top of it.

6.) What’s the healthiest thing in it right now?
Lots of veggies!

7.) What’s the most unhealthy thing in it right now?
Waffles. 🙂  We had a great weekend with my toddler nieces and those are leftovers.  I’m also proud that I ate mine with strawberries and powdered sugar.

8.) What do you wish you had in it that you don’t have now?
More strawberries!

9.) How often do you shop for groceries?
Once a week.

10.) What’s the weirdest thing in your fridge right now?
We’re saving a Stone 10-10-10 beer….only 18 more months until we can enjoy it.

Zumba…what?

I promised myself that I would keep this journey interesting and one of the ways I plan to do this is to try new workout routine.  So here it is.

zumba logoYeah, I know.  I’m totally behind the trend.  But nonetheless tonight is my first Zumba class.  I’m intimidated because I’m sensing that I need a lot of coordination. 🙂

Any advice for me?  What do I need to know?

  1. Do you use coupons? Yes, this is actually one of the new projects (hobbies?) I’m working on, instead of being focused on food.

  3. Are you in a relationship? Married for almost 3 years.
  4. Is your phone always within arm’s reach? Yes, usually.  Although lately I’ve left it at home on accident a lot…
  5. Do you like thunderstorms? Yes.  We had a really cool storm last night.

  7. Are you – or have you – lost weight?  Yes, thank the Lord Almighty.
  8. Do you know how to read a map? Yes, a dying skill, I suppose.

  10. Do you read regularly? Not as much as I’d like to.  Lately it’s been audio books during my workouts.

  12. Do you like picnics? Yes, when I have time to prepare for them.
  13. Do you have a/c? Yes, but it’s high on a shelf right now.  I’m hoping we don’t have to install it in the window.

  15. Do you know how to ride a bicycle? Yep.  Been doing it a lot lately.

Celebration of my love

Saturday was my wonderful husband’s birthday and it was a great day.  I found myself reflecting on how important he is to this journey.  I know it seems like he would be supportive, but living with someone aggressively working on a life change is harder than it seems.  There are many times when he resigns himself to eating a hamburger without a bun, or not visiting a restaurant on a perfect summer day, or getting up at 6:15 am to run a trail with me like this:

muddy shoesSo this weekend was a celebration of him. I saved up my points and made sure I was super active this weekend.  Here are the spoils of our weekend:

We purchased the BBQ this weekend (a great find on Craigslist!) and our newly painted furniture just arrived on Saturday.  Just two of several gifts he received.  The BBQ looks good, doesn’t it?  I enjoyed every bit of it, and our weekend together.

Happiest of birthday’s to the man who has chosen to walk beside me in life and enjoy all this fun.  I love you.

Hello old jeans!

Today I’m saying goodbye to a friend that has been with me for a year. I bought these jeans last year on super clearance at The Gap for about $10.  At the time I was unable to wear any of my jeans and sadly for me, these size 20 jeans fit me.  I had usually been about a 16, and it was a low point for me to wear a 20.  old jeans

As I review my weight loss so far I saw that this is the lowest I have been in a year.  I can’t believe it has been a year!  It is amazing how one can live in denial.  For me this was “some stress weight” I had put on, not my reality for a whole year.

In celebration I wore my size 16 Banana Republic jeans that I haven’t been able to wear in months.  They are still a little snug, but I know it is a matter of a few weeks before they fit like a glove again.  Welcome back, old friends.

Digital Critic

This morning is off to a rough start.  I decided not to workout this morning, but this afternoon, so already I was doubting myself.  Then I hopped on the Wii Fit and it showed a gain of 1.5 lbs.  Exactly.  Each time of three that I tried to convince it otherwise.

Now I know better than to listen to the Wii Fit.  (My bathroom scale, by the way, was much kinder to me.)  The little board that mocks me with “that’s obese” and it’s hard to hear. Especially if you’ve been working on it.

However, this is part of the journey. Someone told me once that this journey would be learning how to fail. I’m bad at failing so I have a lot of learning to do.

What to eat at the movies?

I think today is the first time I’ve ever thought about what to eat before coming to the theatre. Usually movie snacks – junior mint and popcorn are my picks – are a must for movie watching. And we see a lot of movies.  I’m sensing a trend I should he aware of here…

Honestly, I would pay full price if they offered healthier options.  Alas, I am forced to deceive.

So tonight I made air-popped popcorn at home with a little olive oil misto and salt and pepper. I saved my points and we went by the drugstore to buy candy. Did you know Skinny Cow makes candy? A peanut butter Heavenly Crisp bar is just 3 points. I’ll keep you posted on how it tastes.

Meal Planning

One factor that makes all the difference for me in weight loss is planning my meals.  This is reinforced by what happens when I don’t plan my meals:  I get hungry, I search for food to buy, and when buying food, I want it to be good and eat it all up.  And so, I’ve begun to plan my meals and my favorite tool for planning is this:

Usually for me the hardest is dinner because it’s hard to predict how much cooking I will want to do when I get home from work.  This little pad will last me more than a year and focuses on dinners.  It even has a great little option for take out (which lately I’ve been accommodating with Naked Pizza – one large cheese slice is only 2 WW points!).

I’ve learned I need to plan for changes to the plan.  The week goes by and things happen – and sometimes I am just plain exhausted and can’t even think about something to eat.  Having go-to comfort food around, like frozen meals, is essential.

My first post

Two weeks ago I decided to invite others into my weight loss journey by blogging about it, and so, this is my journey.  I have committed to spending 25 weeks of my life determining what it is that makes me fat.  And changing those things.

To jump start my 25 week commitment, which began May 25th, I have been eating less (much less), going to a local boot camp to get my tush kicked, and refraining from alcohol.  The latter is very difficult considering I live in a town with more microbreweries per capita than any other place.  To keep my mind active during these few weeks, I plan to take on a new challenge each week by trying new recipes, finding new ways to challenge myself physically, and exploring darker sides of myself and why I overeat.

Should be an interesting ride.  Care to come with me?
